What are the side effects of technology?
If each new technological advance brings benefits to the company, there are side effects of technology and believe that the problems disappear and that the risks of business interruption belong to the past. Technology must not overlook the immutable need for resilience in the face of risk.
New technologies, new benefits
Mainframes, virtualization, cloud computing, etc. Major technological advances are still shaping up – and rightly so as the solution to many of the problems that had weighed on them until then.
These successive revolutions are the promise of information technology that is always easier to deploy and use, always more accessible.
They lighten information systems and make them much more agile, while allowing users to benefit from ever more sophisticated technologies.
The most recent the cloud is yet another illustration, improving both productivity and user comfort, and the life of the CIO, for which a lot of hassle disappears. Updates are done automatically and almost painlessly, no longer or only slightly interrupting the work of employees.
Migrations to a new version of an OS or strategic business software are no longer the formerly feared tasks of IT managers, inevitably causing their share of dysfunctions, unexpected events and dissatisfaction among company employees.
It must not be elapsed however, that every single technological modernization, even if it resolves the complexities and brings numerous benefits to users, invariably keeps the CIO in the face of a constant: there use to be always issues to be solved and incidents which may interrupt more or less seriously the activity of the company.
New technologies, new problems
The attractive aspect of innovations should not make you forget reality. And this reality is that cons of technology, like unforeseen events, breakdowns and malfunctions will always take place. It is a constant, whatever the technological revolution it is been talking about.
And that without forgetting, of course, the external factors which can indirectly harm the company and paralyze its activities. IT can work perfectly, but if a flood or fire occurs, the work environment would no longer be accessible or operational.
Having its critical applications in the cloud is, for many companies that have made this choice, a factor of serenity and confidence. And they are right.
But it is not because they have shut down their physical servers to adopt a cloud (public, private or hybrid) that they are definitely safe from an incident.
No technology is 100% resilient and here comes disadvantages of technology. By adopting a new technology, the ISD faces problems of a new nature. This is all the more so when it is dependent on the capacity of its technological supplier to resolve exceptional situations.
Such a position can be particularly stressful, especially since the IT department has no choice but to wait passively, without direct control over the management of the incident – and without necessarily having precise information to provide. to the management of his company or to the impacted collaborators.
